October 2014 Meeting Minutes

In Attendance:
James Young, Bart Ossi, Bill Ficke, Greg Dyer, Gary Litavis, Rob Holfels, Dave Lockhart, John Vallrugo, Ken Lundquist, Keith Scruton, Mc Lean Gilbert, Rob Morales, Schuyler Morales, Martin Hatfield, Buz Pezold, Andy Roberts, Jim Whitley, Darryl Cordell

18 members showed for our September meeting. Only 5 finished pieces on the table for show-and-tell, so we were able to spend some time on the details. We had a couple of visitors, a young man Ryan and his mom Gina, with Ryan having a model on display at the HTUSA Show that was going on that day.

President Dave Lockhart kicked off the proceedings with the slideshow. Kevin from Hobbytown showed us over a dozen neat new releases. Remember guys, the Atlanta Area IPMS Holiday Party is coming and I bet you’ll find a great Wicked Santa gift there.

Bill Ficke did confirm that the Atlanta Area IPMS Holiday Party will be held at the Thai Star Restaurant in Norcross (5370 Peachtree Industrial Blvd). The party date is set for December 10th, which is a Wednesday evening. Festivities begin at 7:00 pm (1900 EDT/0000Z) with a potluck heavy appetizer meal and the Gift Exchange afterward. If you’ve not done this before, you really should take a trip out. Great people and lots of fun.

Keith Scruton took the trip to the Huntsville Show and placed 3rd in his category with his 1/48 scale T-6 Texan.

On to the kits at hand. McLean Gilbert began work on a Mark IV Tank (Male). He is improving the Takom kit by accurately modifying the upper hatch. His interior work is coming along nicely. He is replicating “Lodestar III” which is a Mark IV preserved at the Royal Museum of the Army in Belgium in its original warpaint.

Dave Lockhart has a big resin pigboat, the Disney Nautilus from the vintage film “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”. The SciFi Matters kit, which is now out of production, looked to be at least 1/144th scale. Dave finished her with Model Master paints to give it an authentic “Steampunk” boilerplate finish.

Bart Ossi returns to us from a long work-enforced hiatus, and we’re glad to have him back. Bart presented his latest sci-fi work, the Battle Star Pegasus. He doctored the Mobeius Models kit with fiber optics and LEDs to fully illuminate the ship. Bart also finishes his models with Testor Model Master paints. Bart also used an unusual item to provide a base; a Maxwell House coffee can lid!

Rob Morales, inspired by the upcoming release of the movie “Fury”, had a Sherman for us. Rob’s kit was the Tamiya M4A3 Sherman, modeled as a 2nd Armored Division “Hell On Wheels” tank during the Operation Cobra breakout in 1944. Rob added sandbags made from A+B putty on the hull glacis plate, photo etch machine gun bracket on the turret, stores such as ration boxes and crates on the rear deck and a ID panel made from MagicSculp. All items were appropriately tied down with ship rigging twine which is perfect for 35th scale rope.

Bill Ficke showed us how he’s progressing on his Bob’s build kit. He is working on a Hasegawa 1/48th scale P-47D Thunderbolt. This is their Razorback kit which seems to invite a judicious amount of putty. We’re sure Bill will turn out a beauty here.

Greg Dyar continues to turn out some gems from older kits. He built the F-105D Thunderchief “Memphis Belle II” from the venerable Hasegawa 1/72nd scale kit. Greg added weapons from the Hasegawa accessory kit and accurized the canopy by cutting it open and flattening the windscreen through filing, sanding and polishing with toothpaste.

Bart’s Battlestar Pegasus was chosen as our Model of the Month. McLean won our HobbyTown Gift Certificate

Next meeting will be on December 13th. Theme of the Meeting will be “Dr. Bob’s Models”.
