May Model of the Month

Our Model of the Month for May is Mike Idacavage's 120mm figure of a WWII US Navy Salvage Diver. He modeled the Verlinden kit to represent pictures he has of his Dad, who was a Salvage Diver during the War. This is a neat representation honoring one of the Greatest Generation.

May Meeting Minutes

We met at Hobbytown USA on May 3rd, meeting a week early to accommodate for the IPMS AtlantaCon the following week. We had 13 members in attendance.

President Dave Lockhart kicked off the meeting with club business. We are offering the membership individual name tags, good to wear at shows, for $10. Please let Dave know if you  are interested in one. We also discussed the National Convention trophy package, some more home displays, some helpful tips and a video clip of Paul Crawley working on a model at home.

Fred Heil had a Bell X-1 mahogany model with Chuck Yeager's signature the had developed a severe disturbance in the finish. Most of us agreed that it would be extremely difficult to restore without degrading the value of the piece.

Fred also has a diecast Antonov An-225. This is a 1/200 scale detailed diecast (and an equally impressive price tag!) To compare, he also had a primed 1/200 scale B-25 from the Trumpeter USS Hornet kit. The Mitchell would fit entirely on the tail section of the 225. That's one big airplane!

Dave Lockhart had a couple of real space models done. First he displayed an Ares I Launch Vehicle. This is the Real Space Models resin kit in 1/144 scale. Dave used Model Master enamels to produce a nice prototype.

Dave's complementing piece was a Constellation Capsule in 1/48 from Masterpiece models. The prototype was designed as a replacement for the Shuttle, and was designed based on the Apollo Command Module. Again this is a resin kit.

James Young had a 1/72 scale Northrop F-20 Tigershark. This was the Hasegawa model marked to represent a "What-If" (as in What if the USAF bought it) fighter from the Texas Air National GUard's 147th FIG. James again hand painted the model using PollyScale Ghost Gray acrylic. He added some Hasegawa weapons as well.

Rob Morales had a continuation work-in-progress 1/35 scale D-30 122mm Soviet howitzer. It is the Trumpeter Early Version kit done OOB. He used Vallejo Air and Citadel metallic acrylics. It has not been weathered yet.

Mike Idacavage had a continuing project, an ESCI C-47 Dakota. He has the fuselage assembled which was no easy feat considering the warpage of the styrene.

He also finished a Verlinden US Navy WWII Salvage Diver. This resin kit is 120mm and finished with a mix of Model Master paints and weathered with pastels. Mike based the detailing on photos of his Dad from World War II.

Rob Hofels finished up Show and Tell with his in-progress Hasegawa F-8J Crusader. This is the 1/48 scale kit is painted with Gunze paints and is in the weathering process. Rob used Furball Aero decals.

Mike's Diver was chosen our Model of the Month, and Dick Cowart won the Gift Certificate drawing.

Our next meeting will be held on June 14, 1 p.m. at HobbyTown USA Kennesaw.

April Model of the Month

The club selected Art Murray's vignette depicting his Dad and jeep driver hustling to escape fire from an 88 gun during World War Two. Art used the excellent Tamiya Willys Jeep and Tamiya figures. His sand-based groundwork was augmented with Woodland Scenics grasses and trees and Silflor flora.
