March 2014 Meeting

The March 2014 meeting was held on Saturday the 8th at the Kennesaw HobbyTown USA. The meeting had 19 members present, a good showing considering the beautiful weather that day...

Dave Lockhart kicked it off with some club business. A fun feature was some photos showing members' work spaces, from Keith Scruton's kitchen table set up, Mike Idacavage's well-appointed digs, Buz Pezold's compact, ship-shape workbench to Dave's organization. Then there's me (and my ADD). And yes, I have pictures of my family at my desk (to include my son, Fritz...)

We have pretty much gotten the club logo matter settled, thanks to Dave and his nephew for the options. Stay tuned for the official roll out.

Kevin Westphal showed some neat new arrivals on the HT USA shelves, including a super cool M103 Cold War-vintage heavy tank, Revell's 1/48 scale Stearman and the Pfalz "Blue Max" in 1/32.

On to the models; thank you to all who displayed and took the time to fill out the "Brag Sheet".

James Young started us off with his 1/72 scale rendition of Bob Hoover's Mustang. Using the Airfix F-51D, he scratch-built a second seat, added some details that Hoover had on the de-milled warbird and then hand-painted the aircraft in PollyScale RLM03 Yellow. He achieved about the finest hand painted finish I have seen. James used Draw Decals set to finish Hoover's display Mustang.

Mike Idacavage completed his "Dewey" Maintenance Drone. The kit is produced by X Planet in resin. Mike custom modified the base and used Alclad, Mr Color and Model Master paints. The kit is based on the Bruce Dern movie "Silent Running".

Mike also had his work in progress, the Hasegawa Cessna Citation I in 1/48. The fuselage is now enclosed and moving along nicely.

Art Murray had a long-term project completed, and it was worth the wait. The kit was Trumpeter's MiG-21F-13 in 1/32 scale. To enhance it, Art added a Pavla resin cockpit, Eduard PE and also scratch-built the parachute cable and fittings, among other detail corrections to the basic kit molding. Art produced the natural metal finish with Alclad II, although his earlier effort was marred by a bad batch of the Alclad. Art was able to overcome that although he said it caused him to lose some interest in the project. His weathering included using an acrylic wash. He really was able to produce a realistic first-production MiG-21.

Dave Lockhart concluded the Show and Tell with a golden-oldie. His Graf Zeppelin was built using the long out-of-production Hawk kit. Although the kit scales at 1/245, it does take up a substantial footprint. Dave remodeled the engine mounting for accuracy. He used Alclad and Model Master paints, giving it a neatly mottled appearance.

Art's MiG is our Model of the Month. Joe Geib won the gift certificate.

Next meeting will be on Saturday, April 12 at HobbyTown USA, Kennesaw, 1:00 p.m.
